BRANTFORD Public Library

Sunday, October 18  - 2:30 p.m. - REPTILE MAN
Join us in the Main Library Auditorium as we kick off Ontario Public Library week with a crowd favourite. Who knew people liked snakes so much! Come and check out Reptile Man’s snakes, bearded dragons and other creepy creatures. The event is free, but tickets are required. Pick up your tickets at the Information Desk at either library location.

HOMEWORK HELP - Discover how your library can help you with your homework. The Centre is open Mondays to Thursdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. to help students in grades 3 to 8. Laurier Students for Literacy are on hand to provide drop-in homework support.

NEWMARKET Public Library

During Ontario Public Library Week the Newmarket Public Library will encourage voting in the Evergreen Reading Awards Program by marking the program with a display and further promote the bookmarks created in house with the 10 titles listed. We will also set up a laptop at the circulation desk for those who would like to vote online. Ballots will allow those who are not computer savvy to have input. These will later be inputted by library staff. Later, when the winner is announced we will be sure to share this information with our patrons. Further details can be found on their website

NIAGARA FALLS Public Library

Niagara Falls Public Library is celebrating Ontario Public Library Week with a scavenger hunt contest to test your knowledge of your local Library. This year’s province wide theme is "yours to discover". If you’re one of our regular patrons, here’s your opportunity to show off what you know about the Library. If you haven’t visited us recently, this is a great chance to stop by, learn about our services and possibly win a prize! Friday, October 23, 2009 - LIVING Library take out your prejudice!

As part of Library Week, October 18-24, 2009, the St. Marys Public Library has organized a LIVING Library Event.  A group of volunteers will become "living books" for the event. Each book represents a different label, stereotype or prejudice. Individuals and class groups can borrow a "book" from the LIVING Library and speak with them for 30 minutes.    

Some of the books available through the LIVING Library:  

All Together In One Place: a first hand account of communal living.
Creating the Outdoor Stage: a Stratford Festival Theatre Gardener
How I Died: a brain injury survivor
Overqualified: a Mexican immigrant looks for employment
The Flawed Farm: an animal rights advocate living in a farm community plus many more...  

Learn more about a specific career or listen to how an event changed someone’s life. Interview someone about what it means to be thought of as different.   

Borrow a LIVING book for a truly interactive reading experience!  

In the LIVING Library the books are  actually people; people who face labels and/or prejudice in our society. In the LIVING Library you can take out your own worst prejudice - choose from our catalogue!

TAY Township Public Library

"Tay Idol" a singing/talent show will run during the week.  There are three trials (one in each branch) and the grand-finale will be on  Saturday at the end of Library Week.  Drop by if you are in the area!

TERRACE BAY Public Library

Terrace Bay Public Library is celebrating OPLW with a number of events throughout the week. Join us at our open house where the design will be revealed for our new library at this event we will also be naming our adult and child patrons of the year. Our week continues with Elementary school class visits with presentations from the OPP on Internet safety and the introduction of "AskON" a new virtual reference library service. Puppet shows will be held for younger children.  

Join us for demonstrations of our new downloadable audiobooks service, OVERDRIVE and the great new databases from Knowledge Ontario. Don’t forget to participate in our very popular annual "guess the weight of the pumpkin" contest! Door prizes will abound. It will be a jam-packed week of celebrating the library and all that we have to offer!

VAUGHAN Public Library

Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) celebrates Ontario Public Library Week by offering many great programs and fun-filled activities for teens, October 18 to 24. Highlights for Ontario Public Library Week, which coincides with Teen Read Week this year, include Vaughan Public Libraries’ 20th Annual Early Harvest Competition Awards Reception, A Murder Mystery after Dark Costume Party for teens, and a Teen Fashion Swap Party! VPL’s 20th Annual Early Harvest Reception will be held on October 21, at The City Playhouse Theatre to celebrate the achievements of teen artists in Vaughan, in the categories of writing, photography, painting and sketching. Early Harvest is VPL’s annual flagship event providing teens in the City of Vaughan with an opportunity to share their creativity, knowledge, and artistic talent with their peers and the community.

Vaughan Public Libraries is one of several library systems participating in The Ontario Library Association’s Evergreen Award program during Ontario Public Library Week. The Evergreen award, presented to a living Canadian author for a work of fiction or non-fiction, is chosen by readers from across Ontario. Adult customers are welcome to take part by voting for their favorite book from among 10 nominated titles during Ontario Public Library Week. Event location: Pierre Berton Resource Library -  4921 Rutherford Rd.
Will you be a victim or the murderer? Come dressed in character and get locked in the library after-hours, as you investigate hidden secrets and deadly clues to try to solve whodunnit! Revel in the mystery as our guests mingle, eat snacks and have fun with other players as they scheme and backstab. Character descriptions will be available upon registration. For ages 13 to 18. Over 75 of country music’s biggest stars in Canada and the US have shared the titles of their favourite books with WPL and have also donated autographed CDs, photos, t-shirts and more for a fundraising auction.  The auction begins on www.ebay.ca on October 19 and wraps up on October 24 at 4:00pm.  There will also be a special live auction at the Main Library on October 24 of select items.  The list of recommended reads will be released that week as well.

WELLAND Public Library

Welland Public Library have a number of events planned which include the launch of a new service and the demonstration of online databases.

Monday October 19 from 2:30 to 3:30. The Library will officially launch Overdrive Downloadable Audio Books
This is a collection of audio books which allows direct transfer from the Library’s website to iPods, Zune and almost all MPS players. Come and learn how to search download and listen to over 3,000 titles.

Wednesday October 21 between 2:30 and 3:30  - Demonstration of the new Genealogy Research Database Ancestry
This genealogy research toll includes census, military records, court, land and probate information, vital and church records, and passenger lists. It covers Canada, the United States, United Kingdom and some European sources. Please call and register for this demonstration.

Throughout the week we will be holding a famous first line contest. Enter as many times as you like to win a prize.

During Ontario Public Library Week we will waiver overdue fines in our FOOD FOR FINES campaign. If users bring in a non-perishable food item to support the local food banks overdue fines will be forgiven for the items they return during the week. This does not apply to previously billed items.

WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE Public Library

Monday, October 19th there will be a "PJ Storytime" at the library for children.  For adults, we will have a  movie night, beginning with a clip from "Hollywood Librarian", followed by the feature film, "Party Girl".  

Ongoing through the week will be our "annual puzzles to challenge the brains of all ages".   

The Library Board will honour a "Family of the Year".  

"Author Janet Wilson" will visit our library and surrounding schools will bring classes for her presentation.  

"Food for Fines" will be offered for all materials currently overdue.
